Every pony owner has their favourite items they couldn’t be without. It may be an item of tack, clothing, stable items or nifty gadgets – we all have our favourites! However, when it comes to getting the job done sometimes the first thing to hand works like a charm! Here are our top 6 household “equestrian” essentials that we couldn’t be without:
1. The kitchen scissors
An absolute necessity when trying to open plastic food packaging, bailer twine, opening shavings and bails. PLUS, they’re an absolute necessity when trying to finish off your horse’s summer show trimming schedule – although be careful when trimming hair as you may give your pony an unwanted bowl cut – and they may never forgive you!
2. Towels
It’s a given that after a wash you must dry your horse thoroughly with a nice fluffy towel. Problem is you haven’t had time to wash the trusty one. So that new beach towel that you’ve been saving for your holiday will have to be lovingly donated. Towels also come in handy for tack cleaning!
3. Hair brush/comb
Pinching a hair brush or comb from your bedroom drawer is always an easy choice to battle through any tangles in your pony’s manes or tails! Especially when perfecting show plaits, we’ve also been known to end up using our own hair gel or hairspray too to tackle any fly-aways!
4. Car sponge
For when you just don’t have a tack cleaning sponge or cloth to hand. A car sponge can really be the ultimate horse bathing accessory with a large surface area and easy to clean it’s a must!
5. Butter knife
A butter knife is a fantastic way to cut carrots into lengthways quarters! Cuts through easily but not too sharp for keeping in the stables!
6. Wooden spoon
A simple way to mix feed! We find this is a reliable option to really get the job done quickly with no fuss!
Will you use any of our handy hacks? Whether it’s grabbing a hairbrush from the house or using kitchen scissors to trim your pony’s mane or tail there is always a hack for that!
